The takeaway

Judge sponsorship in context—not from audience share alone.

Hyundai’s Next Starts Now campaign made the FIFA World Cup a major automotive marketing moment. But our eDataXchange analysis found that Hyundai’s European digital audience share fell year-on-year, with little uplift around the tournament itself.

A signal, not a verdict

That does not establish that the sponsorship failed. Audience share is relative: model launches, incentives, competitor spending and competitor performance can all move it. A campaign may also influence consideration without producing an immediate website visit.

What would answer the question?

The useful question is what exposed customers went on to do, compared with an appropriate baseline. Independent measurement needs to distinguish reach from consideration and purchase intent, while keeping the competitive environment in view.

Our September webinar with ITV and guests explores measurement of automotive sponsorship and advertising. The question is not simply whether the campaign attracted attention, but whether that attention mattered.
