The takeaway

€750m ÷ 25m estimated intenders = €30 per intender.

The headline needs its denominator. Our analysts estimated that the automotive industry spent around €30 for each European viewer intending to buy a new car within the next 12 months.

How we reached the estimate

  • Around 250 million Europeans watched some of the World Cup, based on aggregated broadcaster audience averages.
  • Applying purchase-intention data and adjusting for the audience’s demographic profile produced an estimate of 25 million new-car intenders.
  • Estimated automotive advertising, sponsorship and activation spending of €750 million divided by 25 million intenders gives €30 per intender reached.

Reach is not return

Every input is an estimate. Audience aggregation, purchase-intention assumptions and the spending total affect the result. It is neither a cost per sale nor evidence of incremental revenue.

The calculation is a starting point for a harder conversation: what did sponsorship and advertising change? Our 17 September discussion, “Was the summer of sport really worth €1bn?”, brings Sophus3 and guests together to explore that question.
